  • Project Name: People with Learning Disabilities Finding Faith

  • Organistation: Prospects
  • Website: www.prospects.org.uk
  • Diocese: Bradford, Chelmsford and Ripon & Leeds
  • Grant Amount: £50,000

Summary:

People with learning disabilities are under-represented in our churches. This project will equip churches  to welcome, include and disciple people with learning disabilities.

Background:

Prospects LogoAcross the UK, over 200 churches partnered with Prospects are welcoming people with learning disabilities and their families into their churches. 4,120 people with learning disabilities are attending accessible discipleship groups every month. Many of these groups began after church members had seen Prospects teams leading accessible worship and teaching at major Christian conferences and decided to introduce a similar approach in their own church.

There is a significant mission field among the 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in the UK who need to know that God loves them, but are under-represented in our churches. The issues that cause them and their families to abstain from attending church services are often not recognised by church leaders, ministry teams and the church membership as a whole.

The goal of this project is to equip ‘learning disability champions’ across the Dioceses of Bradford, Ripon & Leeds and Chelmsford  to train church leaders, ministry teams and worship leaders in the local church for inclusive, accessible worship, teaching and celebration in Sunday services and for accessible discipleship groups; and deeper training to equip church leaders and ministry teams (ordained and lay) to prepare people with learning disabilities for the lifelong Christian journey through baptism, confirmation, first communion, marriage and bereavement.
